Cynthia’s Favorite Finds: What’s New in Senior Living Interior Design
Posted on March 19, 2019 by Mark Warner
Here at Warner Design Associates, we love discovering the latest and greatest in senior living interior design. Whether it’s new color palettes, innovative flooring options, the latest technology, or novel patterns, we’re on it. Once we find something that passes the test, we’re frequently sharing the information with clients and finding imaginative yet thoughtful ways to employ these new finds, so operators will be proud of their communities and seniors will love where they live.
So, what are we interested in lately? We asked Cynthia, our Co-Founder and Lead Designer, to share her latest “favorite finds”.
Definity by Durkan Carpet
This high-end hospitality carpet is perfect for senior living communities; it has a luxurious, hand-crafted look, with serious durability. According to their website, it has, “multilevel textures, more than twice the definition, superior performance and unmatched sustainability.” There are other bonuses such as being made in the USA, shorter lead times (due to being manufactured in the U.S. therefore reducing delivery times), being Red List free, and made with 25% pre-consumer recycled content. After recently meeting with a Durkan rep and experiencing the carpet first hand, we’re excited about this new offering!
Called the “smartest, simplest, and safest way to connect seniors with their loved ones so they never miss another memory”. In essence, it’s a simple tablet with a few essential apps that seniors can use to keep in touch with family. They can view family photos and videos, make calls, send voice emails, play games, view the weather, and listen to music. We look forward to seeing how seniors and their families incorporate this into their lives to stay connected, which is a key factor in health & happiness. (Read more about that in our blog post, “What Does it Mean to Have “Community” in Senior Living?”) Many of the senior living communities we work with are designing technology rooms, so we expect more and more seniors will be using computers, tablets and cell phones moving forward!
Shaw Vinyl Plank Flooring
We’re loving these beautiful and resilient vinyl tiles that use a “state of the art digital imaging technology [that] allows for precise reproduction of domestic an exotic woods for flooring that looks real but tolerates wet maintenance that natural materials cannot handle.” Their aesthetics and durability make them a great option for senior living design, but an additional benefit is that they have incredible noise absorption! Shaw’s vinyl plank flooring has a silencing layer that make it a great option for commercial builds.
Sherwin-Williams 2019 Color Forecast
Colors play a huge role in interior design, so much so that we wrote a blog post about the Importance of Color and Pattern in Senior Living Design. Needless-to-say, when color forecasts come out, we pay attention and weigh in. Ready to see what Sherwin-Williams has to say about 2019’s colors? They created the Colormix ® Color Forecast which gathers more than 40 colors into one master palette, and further categorizes them into six unique color personalities. This will serve as inspiration as we consider palettes that fit the geographic location and resident style at several of our current projects. Which color palette are you most interested in incorporating in your senior living community?
